Our Professional Liability Claims team is looking for a Litigation Specialist who is experienced in handling a variety of liability claims, including medical professional, general, premises, employment practices and Directors and Officers liability claims. ABOUT THIS ROLE:
This is a senior role with our Professional Liability Claims team, which is responsible for investigating, managing and resolving a wide variety of liability claims, including medical professional, general, premises, employment practices and Directors and Officers liability claims. This position offers telecommuting two (2) days a week from home, preferably within a commutable distance to our Glendale office.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
· Manage a full personal case load with varying complexity, coverage issues and liability types in accordance with Claims Department procedures
· Plan strategies for and carry out proactive investigations
· Prepare written summaries of claims investigations
· Compile, analyze and document medical and legal information in claims files
· Interpret coverage contracts/policies, analyze coverage issues and make recommendations for declinations of coverage, reservation of rights letters and tenders of defense
· Suggest appropriate case reserves and reserves changes as necessary
· Update claims database and paperless files as needed
· Select, direct and monitor defense counsel and ensure compliance with the Litigation Management Guidelines and Claims Department procedures
· Communicate effectively with members/insureds, brokers, counsel, experts and other key contacts as necessary
· Maintain personal contact with assigned accounts and provide proactive claims advice to members/insureds as necessary
· Attend mediations, court hearings, trials and meetings with members/insureds and counsel as necessary
· Effectively analyze liability, causation and damages issues
· Draft reports as necessary, including board reports, licensing agency reports and reinsurance reports
· Attend and/or make presentations at member/insured board or BETA board meetings as needed
· Make recommendations for claims resolution and negotiate settlements in accordance with Claims Department procedures
· Effectively manage litigation expenses and review and approve invoices of defense counsel, experts and vendors
· Maintain current knowledge of claims practices, trends, medicine and legal principles
· Occasionally travel, including overnight travel

QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
· High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. BA/BS degree preferred.
· Minimum seven (7) years’ experience handling professional, general and employment practices liability claims, specifically hospital and/or physician medical professional liability claims experience required. Employment practices liability claims experience preferred.
· AIC or similar insurance education required
· Experience with birth injury claims and litigation strongly preferred CPHRM or similar risk management education required or completed within 18 months of hire
· In-depth knowledge of medical practices, hospital policies and procedures, legal principles and insurance practices, with an emphasis on healthcare-related statutes and case law
· In-depth knowledge of professional and general liability insurance policies/coverage contracts
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· High degree of organization and attention to detail
· Excellent analytical, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
· Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, prioritize, meet deadlines, recognize when to escalate issues and work in a hybrid work environment
· Proficiency with computers/software including Microsoft Office products
· Strong data entry and typing skills
Hiring base salary range: $120,000-140,000 depending on experience
· This position is exempt. Note the amount listed is the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this position. Individual rates for the same job title may differ based on their level, responsibilities, skills and experience for a specific role.
